Lion Cub

Lion Cub is a band from Massachusetts. With their giddy mixture of organic instrumentation and modest lyricism, reminiscent of their rural New England background, and the sleek rhythms of electric drums and looped beats Lion Cub is a constantly shifting and progressing take on classic pop music.

Pleasant Sweaters

Michael Louis was probably seeing a show at T.T. the Bear’s in Cambridge when he realized how much he missed playing music on stages. B. Nils Andersen might very well have been accompanying himself on banjo or something all alone that night in his basement bedroom when a similar feeling could have struck him. Michael (of New Jersey) and Nils (a Seattleite by birth and pose) had been playing together for the past year for fun and decided it might be even more fun to form a band. And so they formed a band! Mutual friend Jaron Shevy was recruited to play drums and regularly disrupt practice by covering 90s alt-rock hits. Tyler Triggs, Nils' neighbor, joined the band after playing bass with the three during an alcohol-fueled jam at a party. Nils' housemate Jackie Bernstein asked if she could join the band and "do whatever." Thus, from love of music, a few pleasant drinks, and cohabitation, a band was birthed. Pleasant Sweaters' songs meander from rather raucous (“Late Night Conversations About Egon Schiele”) to a bit mellow (“Falling in Love with Friends”), from finished ("Top of the Pops") to incomplete ("Untitled").

E.R.

E.R. (a.ka. Eldridge Rodriguez) is a co-singer, co-songwriter, co-guitarist and founder of the Boston noise-rock outfit The Beatings. In 2005, he began a series of 8-track reel-to-reel recordings with Greg Lyon (Pending Disappointment, The Spanish Armada), shortly after The Beatings finished up work on their Holding on to Hand Grenades album. While recording what would eventually become his first solo work, E.R. began another project, writing, recording, and producing an album with his side project La Faccia Brutta, which features Greg Lyon and Dennis Grabowski (The Beatings). This spring (while putting final touches on the Brutta record) E.R. finished his solo album, titled This Conspiracy Against Us, and began playing shows in Boston with his backing band, "The New Jerseys," which features Lyon, Willie Dale Scales (Spanish Armada), and Justin Kehoe (Tom Thumb, Migration Trap), and sometimes Kamiko Darrow (La Faccia Brutta). The shows have been incredibly well-received, and un-mastered, leaked copies of the album have been heard being played by rock club DJs and circulating around Boston and NYC. This Conspiracy is a 14-track noise-pop epic that jumps from noise-drenched piano ballads to sad, noise-drenched acoustic guitar and harmonica numbers, to straight-forward noise rockers, without losing the recording's common emotional thread which makes the collection whole. Early reviews of the disc have compared it to everything from Warron Zevon fronting The Fall to Glenn Branca jamming with The Bad Seeds. One listen to E.R.'s lyrics and there is little doubt that he is quite possibly the angriest guy in the indie-rock arena. This Conspiracy was produced by E.R., Greg Lyon, and Ray Jeffery, and features guest vocals by Sarah Borges and Erin Dalbec (The Beatings). Pour yourself a stiff drink, make a list in your head of everyone who has done you wrong, sit back and enjoy the soothing sounds.
